How to pick magic tricks and novelty gifts
Think about who the gift is for. A young magician wants tricks they can learn and show off, a party performer wants something big and visual, and a prankster wants a gag that gets a reaction. This collection covers all three, and most items cost under $50.
For the beginning magician
The thumb tip is a classic first prop, and it is one of the lowest-priced items here. Other good starting points include the flash wand, the ball climax trick, the magic cauldron and the three carded repeat card trick from Haines House of Cards. For someone interested in ventriloquism, The Dummy Speaks book is a simple place to begin.
Stage and party tricks
For bigger effects, look at needle thru arm, ball thru hand, the coffee vase, the zig zag cigarette and jumbo mouth coils. Several of these cost more than the beginner tricks, and they suit a performer who already knows the basics. The chapeaugraphy hat act from Dorfman Pacific is a classic stage act for entertainers. Pair a magic act with a costume from clown costumes for birthday parties.
Pranks and gags
Classic pranks include dirty face soap, a bruised thumb, a cigarette burn, a ketchup squirt, plastic flies, puffy cigs and the quintet snake box. Most of the prank items cost under $25, which makes them easy party favors or add-on gifts. The clown duck call and the invisible dog are silly crowd pleasers for kids and adults. Gag gifts for adults
A few items, like the blow up dolls and the bawdy house tokens, are adult gag gifts meant for grown-up parties. Read each product description before buying for a child, and keep these out of the kids gift pile.

Most items are made by Morris Costumes, with more from Funny Fashion, Rhode Island Novelty, Sunstar and other magic makers. Each product page has the details for that trick or gag.
